The Last Hotel unites two of Ireland’s most fascinating artists – multi-award-winning playwright Enda Walsh and composer Donnacha Dennehy. Together they create a new chamber opera about life, death, duty and guilt.
Dennehy is a composer of urgent, searching music that combines post-minimalist overtones with fragments of his native Irish idioms, particularly the sean nós (or ‘old style’) songs of Irish folk music. Walsh’s reputation as a chronicler of the darker side of the Irish psyche has been forged through works such as The Walworth Farce (2006), Misterman (2011) and Ballyturk (2014) – as well as through his work for music theatre and screen, including the libretto for Once (2011) and the screenplay for Hunger (2008).
The opera will have its world première at Edinburgh International Festival 2015.
